LOCAL Announces Food-Focused Classes

LOCAL Announces Classes for Pre-School to 5th Grade kids

Food-focused science, cooking, art and music for all grades

LOCAL, a Norman restaurant specializing in farm to fork dining, is adding children’s classes to the menu. The restaurant is launching a unique class schedule to give children ownership and excitement about food, nutrition, math, science, and world culture.  The classes are designed to inspire interest in personal nutrition and health while expanding student knowledge of the history and culture of local and world-wide food. Classes are Tuesday-Friday at 9am and 10am for toddler and pre-school children and 3:30-4:20 for elementary students.

“Offering classes in LOCALVILLE has been part of our long-range plan for the space since before we opened,” states owner Abby Clark, a former Norman Public School elementary teacher.  “Parents are actively seeking enrichment opportunities for their children.  We have a unique approach to food in the restaurant.  We want to share and build on that philosophy with our young diners in fun and creative ways that will get them excited about food, food preparation and the cultures of food around the world.”

Morning toddler and pre-school classes are hands-on art, culture and music sessions focused around food.   “For example, one week we are doing Tie-Dye with Beets,” explains Clark. “We’ll create some messy fun art projects, sing songs and explore the 60s flower children movement.  We want to engage young minds and inspire confidence in creation while exposing them to fun foods.  And the parents don’t have to clean it up!”

Afternoon classes for school-aged children bring a bit more brain heft to the table.  Cordon Bleu trained Executive Chef Kyle Mills brings his talent and expertise to the classroom.

“Working with Abby, we’ve developed a fall curriculum that expands and supports what children are learning at school,” Mills explains. “In Kitchen Science we’ll talk about how yeast and bacteria work, how a lemon cooks a shrimp, heat and measurement, just a host of real world applications.  In Sneaky Chef, we dive into nutrition and show kids how making simple substitutions make a big impact on their personal health.  Learning that what we put in our body and where it comes from at a young age lays a strong foundation for healthy choices that will last far into the future.”

Parents or guardians stay onsite at LOCAL during class and can enjoy the complimentary snack station and WiFi.  “We’re offering parents a quiet space in the morning or afternoon to catch up with friends, meet as a book club, knit, read a book or answer email while their children are learning,” states Clark.  “As parents ourselves, we know that we are always rushing so having a parent break in the morning or afternoon can be a welcome time slot on the weekly calendar.”

Classes are $15 each, or $60 a month with sibling and multi-class discounts available.  Infant care is available for $5 during class.

Students will end each session with custom aprons, recipes and recipe boxes and/or art show depending on the class.

Enrollment is now open with no enrollment fee and the class sizes are limited.  Classes begin Tuesday, September 3rd. For the full list of class descriptions and the fall calendar visit www.eatatlocal.com and click on the “LOCALVILLE” tab.   Call (405) 928-5600 or email info@eatatlocal.com to enroll.

LOCAL is located at 2262 W. Main in the Normandy Creek Shopping Center in Norman.

LOCAL Hosts Opening Reception for Oklahoma Artist
Shelly Lewis Stanfield

F
riday, August 10th 6-9pm
Free and open to the public

LOCAL continues its participation in the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art with a new installation by Oklahoma artist Shelly Lewis Stanfield. The opening reception is free and open to the public from 6-9pm, Friday, August 10th with delicious complimentary hors d’oeuvres, wine, and live music.

Currently featured in Santa Fe and Tulsa Galleries, Stanfield’s bold, abstract work is inspired directly from her love affair with architecture, interior design and nature.   Working primarily in acrylics, Stanfield’s energetic application of color invokes emotional movement in her work that acknowledges the structure and chaos of the natural world.

In addition to the Stanfield opening, LOCAL will host the 2nd Friday After-Party inside from 9pm-11pm.  Members of SWAN, the SongWriters Association of Norman, will perform throughout the late evening with an encore performance on Saturday night. Support Local EVERYTHING!

Just because it’s hot doesn’t mean work on the farm stops. Here are just two reasons why we love Oklahoma and our network of Oklahoma farmers:

WAGYU WEEK AT LOCAL
Wagyu Beef is one of the great delicacies of the world, highly prized for it’s intense marbling and “melt in your mouth” characteristics. Surely, this ingredient, featured on the menus of some of the best restaurants in existence, would never be available in Oklahoma, right?! WRONG! Not only are we one of two restaurants in Oklahoma currently serving Wagyu, but the beef was raised LOCALLY!

Meet Ted Davis of Ironhorse Ranch in Macomb, OK. Ted has been raising the finest quality Wagyu beef for years, exporting primarily to Europe, and even tp Japan at one time. Who knew that such a treasure could be found in our own backyard. And so, to celebrate Ted, his Beef, and the great state of Oklahoma, we will be featuring Wagyu Beef specials all week. Be sure to come in and experience the best that Oklahoma has to offer.

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER
Whew! Chicken sure has been in the news a lot lately. Let us tell you a little bit about where our chickens come from. http://www.greatchickens.com/
These chickens have the best little chicken lives near Tahlequah, OK. Free-range and raised without ANY hormones, anti-biotics, or animal products. Enjoy our Perfect Roasted Chicken, Chicken Pita Sandwich, or Almond Crusted Chicken Salad w ith Fresh Berries.

IN OTHER NEWS, LOCAL HELPS FAMILIES BEAT THE HEAT!
It is just too hot to play outside. Moms and Dads, bring your children in to enjoy our child care area, LOCALVILLE. We are ready to feed body and mind with healthy, wholesome food and engaging children’s activities.

Don’t forget, buy one adult entree, get a kids meal for free! Tuesday – Friday, 4-6pm.

DONT COOK! LET US FEED YOU!
No time to cook dinner? Need a quick desk lunch at the office? Swing by the LOCAL MARKET and pick up a grab-and-go meal. This week, choose from:

Come one, come all! July 4th Burger Bash at LOCAL

Norman restaurant LOCAL hosts 4th of July Bash

“Burgers and Bordeaux” party from 10am-2pm on Wednesday

Norman – LOCAL joins the host of businesses celebrating Independence Day by offering a unique holiday menu.  Patrons will receive a glass of red or white wine then enjoy the 1/4pd “Build your Own Burger Bar” for only $10.

“We’ve obviously never been open during the 4th of July before since we’re new” states Executive Chef Ryan Parrott, “so we wanted to make it a party!  We wanted to bring the cookout to the restaurant, which is why we’re putting a grill on the patio.  Customers can come in, get a plate and glass of wine, then meet me on the patio for a burger and all the fixins.”

LOCAL will also have a large variety of picnic and cookout dishes available in the Market for purchase.

“We have bison burgers, prociutto-wrapped Brussels sprouts, sides of mac and cheese, really the best stuff you want to take to your own party or picnic in addition to the “Burgers and Bordeaux” event we’re hosting here,” explains Sammi Still, LOCAL Events Director.

“We’re thinking that people may have morning activities, or a big party that evening of course.  But it’s too hot to cook in the middle of the day – so you should come relax with us!  And what’s more patriotic than an Oklahoma grass-fed burger with bleu cheese and a glass of red wine?  That’s my kind of red, white and BLEU!” continues Parrott.

LOCAL Hosts Opening Reception for Oklahoma Artist Erin Shaw Friday, June 8th 5-7pm

LOCAL, a new restaurant specializing in farm to fork dining joins the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art with a new installation by Norman artist Erin Shaw.  The opening reception is free and open to the public on Friday, June 8th from 5-7pm and will feature selections from Shaw’s Cartographic Experiments series.

Shaw is an MFA candidate in Painting at the University of Oklahoma.  Her Cartographic Experiment explores the rich relationship between the tangible aspects of maps, including brain mapping, and the limitless, intangible opportunities in thought and travel.  Working in everything from wax and paper to resin, Shaw brings a unique sense of place to her multi-layered work.

Commitment to Oklahoma artists is a cornerstone of LOCAL’s philosophy.  The restaurant was designed with a dedicated gallery that would double as a special events or private dining space.

“We are slowly acquiring pieces for the main dining room that will be permanent installations,” states LOCAL owner, Melissa Scaramucci, referring to the glass sculptures by OK artists Rick and Tracey Bewley.  “But we wanted to create a pop-up gallery space that was fluid and could showcase innovative work by Oklahoma’s best artists.”

To help LOCAL achieve this goal, LOCAL hired Sammi Still as curator and special events director.  Still graduated from OU with an MFA in Art History and worked with MainSite Gallery and the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition before joining the LOCAL team.

“I’ve been following Shaw’s work through graduate school and have long admired her process,” explains Still. “I’ve had her in mind as a featured artist from the minute I accepted this position.”

In addition to the Shaw opening, LOCAL will host the 2nd Friday After-Party on the Patio beginning at 9pm.  Members of SWAN, the SongWriters Association of Norman, will perform throughout the late evening with an encore performance on Saturday night.

The Norman Arts Council sponsors the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art.

Live Music Comes to the Local Patio Friday and Saturday Nights

SWAN Songwriters to Perform May 11 & 12 at LOCAL

2nd Friday after-party kicks off on the LOCAL patio

LOCAL, a new restaurant specializing in local food, is adding local music to the menu. The restaurant is launching free, live music on the patio every Friday and Saturday night 8:30-11:30 p.m., starting May 11.  The inaugural performers are SongWriters Association Norman members David Henson, Richard “Daddy” Love and Michael Bendure.

“As a board member of the Norman Arts Council, I am personally committed to the success of the arts in Norman,” said LOCAL owner Melissa Scaramucci. “When LOCAL decided to jump into the live music scene on the weekends – my first phone call was to SWAN.”

SWAN, a community of more than 60 songwriters, celebrates its three-year anniversary in June.

“We are thrilled to embark on this new opportunity to perform at LOCAL,” said Bendure. “LOCAL’s mission is to provide locally grown foods; it makes perfect sense for them to also provide local music and art. We look forward to this new adventure together and appreciate the chance to share our original music in this great new venue.”

SWAN members will perform each month at LOCAL following the 2nd Friday Circuit of Art hosted by the Norman Arts Council with an encore performance on Saturday night.

“With most of the art circuit venues closing around 9 p.m., having a dedicated location to continue the event while meeting our goal of supporting SWAN is fantastic,” said Norman Arts Council Executive Director Erinn Gavaghan. “Tying SWAN and LOCAL together creates a new venue for the circuit and more opportunities for performers and fans alike to consistently participate in the promotion of our local songwriters.”

LOCAL is located at 2262 W. Main in the Normandy Creek Shopping Center in Norman.  The phone number is (405) 928-5600.

Love and Bendure formed SWAN in 2009 as a non-profit songwriting group organized under the Norman Arts Council. It is designed to promote and support the creation of original music and songwriting in the greater Norman community. Annual membership is $20 for artists and includes opportunities for live performances up to five times per month, guest presentations about different aspects of songwriting and performing and more.

Information is available online at www.normansongwriters.org and at www.eatatlocal.com.

This Week at Local

Fantastic things are brewing this week at LOCAL!

First of all – we’ve learned that no matter how many tables we block for walk-ins – you should probably make a reservation for dinner on Friday and Saturday night.  You can do it easily here – or call and we will take care of you – 928.5600.

This week we are especially excited about our amazing risotto.  Carrot Ginger Risotto with Royal Red Prawns.  These prawns are deep water Gulf Prawns – some brave soul dives about 2400 feet down to retrieve these giant bright red beauties.  Get em while you can!

Thursday brings the Decadent Design competition. Local Executive Chef, Ryan Parrott partnered with LOCAL architects ADG to recreate the Norman landmark Bavinger House as an inspired dessert. All our favorite things in one amazing dish!

See you at LOCAL this week!

So much asparagus, so little time.

Asparagus

Asparagus

Provence, Alsace, Etauliers, NORMAN.   France doesn’t hold the deed to an Asparagus Festival.  This week at LOCAL we have at least four farms banging down our kitchen door with buckets, sacks, and bundles of fresh asparagus.

What a delightful vegetable – easily adaptable to all forms of cooking.  Saute – cream – grill – chill – you name it and the accommodating asparagus happily yields its spring green flavor to your dish.

Find it this week at LOCAL as a surprising side dish.  Give it a happy wink as it shows up in the Farmer’s Market Salad.  Wonder at the risotto:  Asparagus and Truffle with a grilled Portobello mushroom.  Delight at our creamy bisque:  Asparagus, Leek and Goat Cheese.

Last week we reveled in the bumper crop of Morel Mushrooms.  Now Asparagus is ready.  Eating seasonally has never been so tasty – or so easy.  See you at LOCAL.
